New Mexico: Home

Automobile registration and state-issued plates began in 1912 in New Mexico, just five months after statehood.  The "Zia" sun symbol started in 1927 and has been in continuous use ever since, making it the longest-running graphic element in the United States.  "LAND OF ENCHANTMENT" has appeared since 1941 continually as well.  The earliest of the three currently valid base plates began issue in 1991.
